Dixons Clothing Store

History of Dixons Clothing

Established in 1895 as a tailoring business in Railway Road, the first Dixon to put his name above the shop front was David, the great grandfather of the current directors, brother and sisters, Ian, Janet and Barbara. The fact that Dixons of Coleraine has stood the test of time right down to the fourth generation speaks volumes about the quality of service and the high esteem in which the family store is held in the area.

The business, which quaintly termed itself "scientific tailors in ladies and gentlemens clothing" was soon popular with the shoppers of Coleraine, and boasted a range of 'ladies' costumes from two guineas'. The family moved their trade to a more central position in Church Street in 1928 and Mr. Harry Dixon, a son of the founder, joined the company in 1930 or thereabouts.

The advent of ready-to-wear clothing in the 1940's brought about some changes to the company, and a number of new departments were introduced, including childrens wear, lingerie and household.

With the post war economic boom of the 1950's, some major rebuilding work was carried out to the premises, and a new accessories and giftware department was opened.

Moving into the 1960's, a coffee shop opened on the second floor. There were changes away from the shop floor as well. The death of Harry Dixon in 1962 was followed by the transformation of the business into a limited company, with his son Harold Dixon taking over as Managing Director. Harold was joined in the business by his wife Joan, who developed a very successful ladies wear trade, introducing many new European collections.

In 1976, at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland, the store was completely destroyed by fire. The family continued to trade in temporary premises on the opposite side of the street until the rebuilt store opened in June 1978.

Harold retired in 1988 and his son Ian and daughters Barbara and Janet are actively involved in the day to day running of the company. In recent years they have extended the business by opening two Gerry Weber shops and a Basler shop in the Belfast area. Dixons of Coleraine continues to evolve and the online shop is their latest venture and a means of reaching customers throughout Ireland and the UK.
